National Pesticide Media Database

The National Pesticide Media Database was developed by Virginia Tech Pesticide Programs (VTPP) in 1996. The project was initiated by a grant from the Pesticide Safety Education Program, Cooperative State Research, Extension, and Education Service (CSREES) of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Initially, photographs were taken by VTPP personnel and digitized into an online database. More recently, images have been donated by other cooperators, including the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Oklahoma State University. The database software runs on the latest version of the Gallery image management system. Gallery is an open-source software application that runs on several types of server platforms, including the Mac OS X server used by VTPP. The database is named "PesticidePics" and offers digital images for use in nonprofit pesticide safety education programs and related uses where the images used will not be resold or represented as the property of the user. These works are the property of the original photographer and have a common-use intellectual property protection as stated here. By clicking on the line above and using the database, you have indicated that you will abide by the terms of use as outlined below and the Creative Commons License protecting the content of this site.

All materials contained in the website are the copyrighted property of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and those institutions who provided images to the database.

Unless otherwise specified, the materials and services on this website are for your personal and noncommercial use, and you may not modify or sell any media obtained from the website without written permission from Virginia Tech Pesticide Programs.

Each image is embedded with an electronic digital watermark. This technology enables us to track the use of each image and to protect the intellectual property rights of the photographers from commercialization and misuse. Users of these images MAY copy the images for use in their pesticide safety education programs for presentations and web-based media. You MAY NOT sell or use these images individually or as part of a product to be sold or commercialize these media in any way.

We DO ask that you credit these images to the photographer(s), Virginia Tech, and this website if you use them. A typical citation for using one or more images should be written as follows:

Terms of Acceptance

We gladly accept photographs from third parties for inclusion in the database.

We will credit you for your work, and we will require users of those photographs to adhere to the terms of use (above) to protect your works.

  • Photographs must be in JPEG format and generated by a 7-megapixel camera (minimum) or above.
  • We post the original (largest) resolution, which is automatically downsampled by the database. These photographs must be color corrected and cropped to make the photos as high quality as possible.
  • We will not ordinarily accept photographs that are blurry, of poor composition, or that show people's faces, licenses, or other identifying marks that might be considered liable.
  • We will not accept offensive material.
  • We will accept photographs that are slightly lower quality if they capture an event or process that is difficult to obtain or re-create. We will handle these on a case-by-case basis.
  • If photographs contain identifiable subjects (as mentioned above), a release must be signed by the owner of that subject or the subject himself or herself (if a person).
  • All photographs submitted to the database must include a letter stating that the photographer is responsible for the origination of those images and has not duplicated images in violation of property or copyright ownership.
  • If photographs are clearly owned by another party (such as a corporate entity or other private individual), we will require a clearance release from that party in addition to the submitting party if the submitting party is different from the originating source.
